This course surveys the economic history of the United States from the
Colonial era to the present day. The central purpose is to show how economic
analysis illuminates past trends and events; and how, at the same time,
an understanding of economic history illuminates current economic problems.
You will find this course useful, even if you want to become an econometrician
or an economic theorist. Understanding how the data that economists use
is generated by particular institutions and historical processes is a fundamental
skill valuable to all economists.
