Title: The Pattern of U.S. -- Asian Pacific Rim Trade, 1965 -- 1987
Abstract: In order to provide a ground work for further discussions,
this paper outlines the pattern of trade amongst the U.S., Japan, China, Hong
Kong, Indonesia, South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan
and Thailand. The purpose of this paper is two-fold: a) to review the
patterns of exports and imports; b) to examine these patterns in terms of
changes in the import and export penetration of countries in the region.
The major question raised by this paper is whether the conventional wisdom
regarding changing trading relationships in the region is supported by the
available data.
